The Wheels of justice grind slow. Abacus Engineering was appointed as structural engineering consultant in 2019 to examine a floor system in a basement carpark of a multistorey North Apartments, Grey Lynn. North Apartments is a residential apartment complex located on Great North Road in Auckland’s Grey Lynn. The carpark had undergone cracking to a degree which did not appear to be normal given the age of the structure. 

Abacus Engineering wrote an extensive detailed report on the condition of the floor slab and aspects of both its structural adequacy and fire performance. 

In early 2026 we received notification that the parties (which included the designers, the fire engineers and the builder) had settled. Despite pushbacks on our report and arguments with teams of experts, our original report was broadly upheld, and repairs are currently being carried out (February 2026). Abacus Engineering provided design for the remedial fire engineering works for the carpark.
